What is a Carbon Fiber Sucker Rod?

2026 07/13

Carbon fiber sucker rods are composite materials made of carbon fiber as reinforcement and resin as the matrix. Specifically, they are manufactured using high-strength polyacrylonitrile carbon fiber filaments as reinforcement and epoxy resin or vinyl ester resin as the matrix material, through a pultrusion molding process.

Carbon fiber sucker rods are lightweight, have high specific strength, and high specific modulus. Their specific gravity is less than 1/4 that of steel, their specific strength is approximately 7 to 12 times that of steel, and their specific modulus is approximately 3 to 5 times that of steel.

Carbon fiber sucker rods exhibit high fatigue strength, significantly superior to steel, and a long service life, making them particularly suitable for the reciprocating motion conditions of sucker rods. They also possess strong corrosion resistance, being resistant to acids and alkalis, and have a much longer service life in seawater than steel components. They effectively resist corrosive environments with high mineralization and sulfur content in wells. Furthermore, carbon fiber sucker rods have excellent thermal properties and are resistant to high temperatures (up to 180℃).

Structurally, carbon fiber sucker rods are commonly constructed using a three-layer structure (inner carbon fiber, middle layer, and outer high-modulus glass fiber) wound and then cured in a single process; some products are also available in flexible strip or circular cross-section shapes.

Comparative test data with ordinary steel sucker rods shows that the average upward current of carbon fiber sucker rods is approximately 33% of that of steel rods, the downward current is approximately 45%, the average maximum load is approximately 63.9%, and the average minimum load is approximately 59.6%.

Carbon fiber sucker rods are mainly used in oilfield rod pump production systems as a oilfield sucker rod and oil well sucker rod, and are particularly suitable for harsh working conditions with high extraction difficulty, such as deep wells, ultra-deep wells, corroded wells, and unevenly ground wells. These corrosion resistant sucker rod, lightweight sucker rod deliver key benefits: energy saving & consumption reduction (up to 18%-50% power savings), enabling deeper downhole extraction, excellent corrosion resistance for greatly extended service life (corroded wells'average pump inspection cycle extended by 1.5 times), higher oil output, and easy installation -- no splicing required, with single rod lengths up to 3000-5000 meters.
